What is IES Exam?

Indian Engineering Services (IES) examination, which is also known as Engineering Services Examination (ESE in short) is among popular national level recruitment exam which is organized by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The real purpose of this examination is to recruit candidates for various positions in engineering department working under Government of India. The Engineering Services Examination is been conducted for four engineering branches namely:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

IES examination is considered among the toughest competitive examination in India. Around 2 lakh students appear for the exam every year which makes it among top competitive exams in the country. The exam recruits the Group A as well as Group B officers which are responsible for various technical positions in Government of India. The exam is a three stage recruitment process which includes IES Prelims, IES Main and finally the personality Test. On basis of the final merit of all candidates, they are been recommended for all technical posts in Government of India.

Eligibility for IES Exam 2020

It is necessary for all the students that all the norms which are prescribed by the UPSC are been complied by them. Some of the criteria been mentioned below:

  1. Nationality

All the candidates which are appearing for exam should be

A citizen of India, a subject of Nepal, Tibet or Bhutan who came to India before 1st January 1962

A person of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma or any of the East African countries.

  • Age Limit

All the Aspirants must be at least 21 years old and must not have attained the age of 30 years old on 1st January 2020. The upper age limit of 30 years is been relaxed to 35 years in the case of government servants of various government departments.

  • Physical Examination

In order to be eligible for the examination, all the candidates must be physically fit as per guidelines made by the organizing body.

  • Education Qualification

The candidate must possess the following in order to be eligible for IES 2020:

  • An engineering degree from recognized university
  • Obtained a degree or a diploma from any foreign engineering university which is been recognized in India
  • Passed graduate membership examination from various institutes like Electronics and Telecommunication, Electronics and Radio Engineers and Aeronautical Society of India.

IES Exam 2020 Exam Process

Step 1: Filling out Application Form

The forms are available online on UPSC website. All the candidates are required to fill the application form in which they have to select their preferred venue for the exam centre. At last they need to submit prescribed fees for application form as per the category of the candidate.

Step 2: Downloading the Admit Card for IES 2020

When the examination’s Admit card is been available online on the official website of UPSC, the candidate needs to enter their application number as well as their date of birth in order to download the admit card.

Step 3: IES 2020 Prelims (Preliminary Examination)

All the candidates need to appear for the preliminary entrance exam of IES and students are advised to reach the centre before one hour of the exam.  Once the result is been announced, candidates who are qualified for the IES Main are needed to fill the IES Main Detailed Application Form (DAF).

Step 4: IES Main Exam 2020

Students who clear the first stage of the examination will be allowed to appear for the IES 2020 Main exams. This stage is been considered as the toughest part to clear during the whole process of the examination. Once the IES Main results are out, the candidate is been called for the interview process which is the last stage of the examination.

Step 5: IES interview 2020

Candidates who have qualified for prelims as well as main examination are been asked to participate in the final interview process. Only those students who are able to clear personal interview round are qualified for the final process of recruitment in various government departments.

Step 6: Result & final cutoff for IES 2020

The results are been declared as the date been provided by the UPSC and the process of recruitment begins after the final result. This is the final process after which candidates are called to join the offices as executive engineers, mid-level manager positions as well as various bureaucrats of their respective departments.

The cut-off is released just after the final result. The final list states number of candidates selected for each of the category in each Engineering branch. This ends the process of whole IES examination for year 2020.
